Cookie Policy

Nothing on this site sets a cookie unless you agree to it first. We ask once, with Accept and Reject given equal weight, and you can change your answer at any time. This page lists every cookie, who sets it, what it does, and how to refuse it.
1. What a cookie is
A cookie is a small file a site stores in your browser so it can recognise your browser later. Related technologies, such as local storage and pixels, do much the same job. Where this page says "cookie" it means all of them.
2. How your choice works
When you first arrive, everything optional is switched off. Google Analytics is loaded in a mode that sets no cookies and sends no identifiers, and the embedded videos are held back behind a placeholder. Nothing is stored until you press Accept.
If you accept, we record that decision in your browser's local storage under firma-consent, along with the date, so we do not ask again. If you reject, we record that too, and the optional cookies stay off.
To change your mind, use the Cookie settings link, which is in the footer of every page. It clears your saved choice and asks again. Withdrawing is as easy as agreeing was.
3. Analytics
If you accept, we use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages get read. It sets two cookies, _ga and _ga_SZ8M29CD94, which together recognise your browser across visits so that a returning reader is not counted twice. Both expire after 24 months.
The data goes to Google, who process it on our instructions. We have not enabled Google Signals, ad personalisation, or any advertising feature, and we do not try to work out who an individual visitor is.
4. Other things stored in your browser
We set no other cookies. The rest of the site is static HTML, CSS and JavaScript. One item is kept in browser storage rather than in a cookie, and it is not used to track you:
- firma-consent, in local storage, holding the cookie choice you made and the date you made it, so we do not keep asking.
5. Requests to third parties
Two further parts of the site cause your browser to contact Google directly. In both cases this happens under Google's terms rather than ours, and we have no access to what is stored or logged.
Web fonts. Our typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts on every page. Google Fonts does not set cookies, but the request tells Google your IP address, your user agent, and which page you were loading. This is the one request that happens before you can consent to it. We intend to serve the fonts from our own domain instead, which removes the third party completely.
Video. The walkthrough videos are embedded from Google Drive, and Google sets cookies when one loads. Nothing is requested until you accept cookies or press the button on the video itself, so the page can be read without contacting Google for the video at all.

6. How to refuse them
- Press Reject when we ask, or open Cookie settings from the footer and reject there. This is the only step most people need.
- Simply do not press Load video on a video placeholder. That page then makes no request to Google for the video.
- Block requests to fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com with a content blocker, to stop the fonts as well. The site stays readable on your system typefaces.
- Install Google's official Analytics opt-out add-on ↗, if you want the same result on every site you visit.
- Clear cookies already stored, through your browser's privacy settings.
- Review what Google holds and adjust it at myaccount.google.com/data-and-privacy ↗.

If we add anything that sets a cookie, we will list it here and update the date at the top before it goes live.
